Bucharest Nine (B9) defence ministers hold talks on collective security and deeper cooperation

During a two-day meeting in the capital of Romania, Bucharest Nine (B9) defence ministers discussed the conclusions of the 2021 NATO Summit and NATO-EU cooperation. Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer represented the Slovak Ministry of Defence at the event.

Speaking after the meeting, Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer said: ”The discussions offered an opportunity to review the current processes across the Alliance and to take a closer look at NATO 2030 – individual aspects of its military pillar, ambitions to strengthen collective defence, and its major task of deterrence and defence. It is the particular focus on deterrence and defence that is clearly reflected in the importance and efficiency of the B9 format in terms of setting the Alliance's agenda in line with our common interests.“

In this respect, Mr Majer put emphasis on supporting a fully coherent approach, including a shared perception of goals, and on pursuing a responsible performance of commitments to increasing the responsiveness of the Allies. “What the Alliance needs is a unified vision of resilience and a set of clear, concreate and measurable goals to achieve it. By working the goals into national plans and implementing them, individual Allies will work towards fulfilling NATO's collective intention,” clarified Mr Majer.

Bucharest Nine (B9) defence leaders also addressed the need to strengthen security cooperation not only in the given region, but also across the NATO Alliance and the European Union. According to Mr Majer, some real good progress in this cooperation has been made since 2016. Mr Majer said: “Yet, we need to do more and we must keep up the momentum. That's why I fully support the adoption at the earliest possible date of a new EU-NATO declaration, including on the new areas of our common interest, where we can see the inevitable need to act jointly and coherently. There is no alternative to EU-NATO cooperation.”
