Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer met the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to Slovakia, Her Excellency Ms Lorea Arribalzaga Ceballos and the new Spanish non-resident Defence Attaché, Col Miguel Golmayo Fernandéz for talks on SVK-ESP defence engagement and the security developments in Ukraine and close to its borders.
Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer said: “We reject the decision of the Russian Federation to recognise the independence of the separatist regions – the so-called Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic. Slovakia supports Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty. On this, we share a common position with our Allies – in no way do the separatist regions represent independent states for us.” Mr Majer and Ambassador Ceballos agreed that Russia's behaviour is a violation of international law.
Mr Majer also confirmed Slovakia's interest in further improving the level of bilateral cooperation with Spain – for example on unexploded ordnance disposal (EOD) between the NATO EOD COE Trenčín and the C-IED COE Madrid and on training and exercises with members of the Spanish Armed Forces to participate in Ex Slovak Shield and Ex Toxic Valley.
Both sides also appreciated Slovakia's and Spain's contributions towards Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO), aimed at strengthening the EU's strategic autonomy.
