Today (Thursday 10 March 2022), the Slovak-Hungarian Mixed Commission for Military and Other Security and Political Issues met in Budapest for talks on SVK-HUN bilateral defence cooperation and current security challenges – especially those in the face of Russia's unprovoked aggression against Ukraine and the refugee crisis therewith associated. The SVK MOD was represented at the meeting by Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer.
On Ukraine, Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer said: “Slovakia is determined to continue providing Ukraine with strong support, not only political, but also material – by supplying humanitarian and military aid. We'll do our maximum for this cause.“
Also discussed was the work of both countries within NATO and the EU, including on Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) where both Slovakia and Hungary meet as project members on several collaborative projects.
Both sides agreed on the importance of joint training and exercises and expressed their interest in ensuring continuity of these activities into the future. Deputy Defence Minister Majer noted the potential for greater cooperation in the field of armaments.
The Slovak-Hungarian Mixed Commission is one of the twelve (originally eleven) mixed SVK-HUN commissions which were formed on the basis of the Treaty between the Slovak Republic and the Republic of Hungary on Good Neighbourly Relations and Friendly Cooperation dated 19 March 1995. The Commission has met regularly once a year since 1999, alternately in Slovakia and Hungary.
