Today (1 April 2022), Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď has presented a refurbishment project for the Armed Forces Recreation Centre (AFRC) at Zemplínska Šírava Reservoir, which is set to receive an upgrade after years of neglect. On completion of the project, the AFRC resort will serve the needs of service personnel and members of the public.
Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “After years of neglect and absolute disinterest of the former governments that have sold off pieces of land around the Armed Forces Recreation Centre, I’m immensely pleased to announce that we have a concrete vision for what this facility with a unique location will look like in the short future. The project visualisation is just the beginning and I believe the recreational facility will soon start serving its purpose.” He said the facility has the potential to be widely used in this region, adding “It will also provide rest and recuperation (R&R) for war veterans who definitely deserve it.”
The hotel of the former AFRC resort, which has been out of operation since 2019, is completely empty. According to estimates, the refurbishment works to the facility could be launched as early as 2023. Meanwhile, the refurbishment documents and the selection of the contractor will be put out to tender.
In addition to providing rest & relaxation, wellness & fitness, the newly reconstructed complex will also offer congress services as well as sporting retreats.
