Since its establishment on 1 January 1993, the Slovak Republic has been part of UN peacekeeping forces and operations. Over the past 29 years, thousands of Slovak servicemen and women have so far rotated in and out of 16 peace operations under the UN flag worldwide.
Thanking all ex- and serving UN peacekeepers from among the ranks of the Slovak Armed Forces on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “The present day fully confirms that peace is not a matter of course. On the contrary, it is one of the most valuable assets. Slovakia is, therefore, a proud contributor to keeping and building peace under the UN auspices. We are determined to continue to be part of peace efforts and security building within the United Nations, the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance, and we will do so actively and responsibly, side by side with our allies.”
A total of 240 SVK soldiers are currently deployed on UN peacekeeping duties in UNFICYP, Cyprus, where they are tasked with preventing any reoccurrence of the fighting between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, supervising the ceasefire, restoring and maintaining the rule of law on the island, and undertaking humanitarian tasks.
Additionally, two SVK military personnel are serving as military observers in UNTSO – the UN's longest-running mission – in the Golan Heights, Syria. They have been involved in monitoring ceasefires as well as supervising the Armistice Agreements in the region. In discharging their duties, the SVK UNTSO peacekeepers are unarmed and impartial.
UN peacekeeping forces are deployed on the basis of mandates from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Depending on specific challenges, the mandate determines the conditions of deployment and service for UN blue berets, including their roles and responsibilities.
The International Day of UN Peacekeepers is observed on 29 May and commemorates the first mission of the international community in the Middle East in 1948.
