Marian Majer meets Deputy Assistant Secretary for Central and Eastern Europe Robin L. Dunnigan for talks on Ukraine and defence cooperation

Today (2 June 2022) at the Slovak Ministry of Defence, Deputy Defence Minister Majer met with Deputy Assistant Secretary for Central and Eastern Europe Ms Robin L. Dunnigan from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs. They directed their conversation to the new assistance package for war-torn Ukraine, SVK-U.S. defence and security collaboration on matters of mutual interest, and NATO cooperation.

On Ukraine, Deputy Minister Majer noted that Slovakia will continue to work closely together with our Allies in order to keep military supplies flowing to Ukraine, as exemplified by the latest military aid package approved by the Slovak Government this week. On NATO's eastern front, he praised the U.S. deployment to NATO's eFP battlegroup in Slovakia, established in response to Russia's unprecedented aggression against Ukraine. On modernisation, Majer said: “In the long run, we have maintained a high level of SVK-U.S. bilateral cooperation – especially driving forward the modernisation of the Slovak Armed Forces, where the U.S. is the key partner for Slovakia.”

The U.S.-SVK Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA), adopted on 1 April 2022, offers a concrete framework for expanding and deepening SVK-U.S. defence cooperation. “Thanks to the DCA, there is an adequate legal basis for our bilateral cooperation. We’ve been intensely engaged in setting favourable conditions for the implementation of concrete projects to modernise our military infrastructure,” Majer added. In addition to providing the legal framework and clear rules of cooperation, the DCA is the necessary prerequisite for receiving U.S. funding to upgrade the defence infrastructure of the Slovak Armed Forces. Thanks to this, savings in essential investments can be made in the state budget.
