Deputy Defence Minister Majer: We welcome and support all activities that are bringing Georgia closer to the Alliance

On the margins of GLOBSEC 2022 in Bratislava today (3 June 2022), Deputy Defence Minister Marian Majer met First Deputy Defence Minister of Georgia Lela Chikovani. The two counterparts spoke about SVK-GEO defence ties, including steps towards defence industry cooperation, Russia's invasion of Ukraine and related issues impacting on the security situation in Europe, and would not avoid discussing the current developments in Georgia. Like in Ukraine, some of Georgia's territory has been occupied by the Russian Federation since 2008.

On Georgia, Mr Majer said that Slovakia will continue to be a strong supporter of Georgia's Euro-Atlantic ambitions. He was particularly appreciative of the Georgian public and their backing for the country's integration into NATO. “We welcome and support all activities that are bringing Georgia closer to the Alliance,” he said, while reaffirming that Slovakia has been a consistent supporter of Georgia's territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.

During the meeting, Ms Chikovani and Mr Majer also discussed the quality of bilateral engagements between the countries and identified new possibilities for the further development of bilateral defence links, whereas both countries acknowledged their shared interest in joint military education, exercises and training programmes, as well as taking a close interest in explosive ordnance disposal (EOD).
