Defence Minister Naď honours the heroes of the Slovak National Uprising in Bratislava's SNP Square

Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď took part in a commemoration to mark the upcoming 78th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising in Bratislava's SNP Square today (25 August 2022).

Speaking at the ceremony, Jaroslav Naď said: “Even 78 years on, we owe a huge debt of gratitude and respect to the heroes of the Slovak National Uprising. They faced a life or death situation as they fought to win life for the future generations and, in doing so, many of them made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Drawing a parallel between the SNP's struggle for values and democracy and that of the war in Ukraine, Naď said: “For the power ambitions of a single man, tens of thousands of people are dying once again. Unfortunately, history repeats itself. Therefore, we, just as the men and women of the Resistance did during the SNP, must stand the test of values and pursue the just cause of defence.”

The Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944, with Banská Bystrica becoming the centre of Slovakia's WW2 Resistance. With its scope, length and military significance, it ranks among the most significant Anti-Nazi resistance movements in the world.
