An MOD programme of activities to mark Veterans Day

To mark Veterans Day, also known as Remembrance Day in the Commonwealth of Nations, on 11 November 2022, the Slovak Ministry of Defence is preparing a programme of activities through which MOD leaders and service chiefs, veterans of the uniformed services, serving members of the Armed Forces, and the wide public will honour the veterans and victims of both World Wars and all armed conflicts.

Representing the MOD at the official Veterans Day commemoration, in remembrance of all those who fought in the bloodiest of conflicts in the history of mankind, to be held at 10:00 local time at Petržalka - Kopčany Cemetery in Bratislava will be Secretary General of the MOD Service Office Peter Kozák.

As part of this commemoration following a two-year pause over the coronavirus pandemic, the Run in Honour of War Veterans will symbolically start at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month – exactly at a time when the last salvo was fired at the signing of the armistice ending World War I at Compiègne, France in 1918.

The 5.2km race will host some 300 runners, including SVK soldiers and Allied troops serving with the NATO Multinational Battlegroup Slovakia. “Among those taking part in the Run in Honour of War Veterans will be sportspeople of the DUKLA Military Sports Centre Banská Bystrica, officer cadets of the General M. R. Štefánik Armed Forces Academy Liptovský Mikuláš, and service members of the Slovak Armed Forces who will be running in full field kit,” Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said.

Throughout 11 November, Slovak Armed Forces service members will hand out red poppies across Slovakia's cities to raise awareness of this memorial day and the Red Poppy tradition.

Later that same day, between 18:00-22:00, red poppies – as a symbol of remembrance – will be projected onto Bratislava Castle in respect of all veterans.

Additionally, Radio and Television Slovakia 2 (RTVS 2) will present the Military Deed of the Year 2021 Awards at 20:10 on Thursday 10 November 2022, with a rebroadcast at 14:55 on Friday 11 November 2022.

No press accreditation is required for media representatives wishing to attend the Veterans Day commemoration and the Run in Honour of War Veterans in Bratislava's Petržalka.

As soon as construction works on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Rázus Embankment in Bratislava are complete, media representatives and members of the public will be informed of the date for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier unveiling ceremony.
