State Secretary Marian Majer in Estonia: Speed is a very important factor, making our assistance to Ukraine effective

Meeting today (19 January 2023) at the joint initiative of the United Kingdom and Estonia, defence and deputy defence ministers gathered at the Tapa base in Estonia for discussions on arms supplies for Ukraine ahead of tomorrow's Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG) meeting at Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

Slovakia was represented at today's event by State Secretary of the Slovak Ministry of Defence Marian Majer. The aim of the meeting was to coordinate military aid for Ukraine, to identify a range of possibilities for the future, and to provide an update on the military support packages delivered most recently by the participating countries.

In a statement after the meeting, State Secretary Marian Majer said: “Slovakia was invited to the meeting as one of the countries to have provided Ukraine with significant assistance since the start of Russiaʼs invasion. Thanks to its military, financial, economic and humanitarian aid, the international community has been continually seeking possibilities and ways to see the Ukrainian people defending themselves through to victory for their country, freedom, and our shared values.”

As Mr Majer said, Slovakia has been kept informed of the operational needs of Ukraine's Armed Forces for heavy combat equipment, including main battle tanks (MBTs), field artillery (FA) systems, air defence (AD) systems, military training, and equipment maintenance. “We understand that in this situation speed is a very important factor, making our assistance to Ukraine effective – which is why we are closely consulting with our allies, both in a larger format at joint meetings like this one and bilaterally,” he added.
