State Secretary of the Slovak Ministry of Defence Marian Majer received a delegation of Georgian Parliamentarians led by Chairman of the Defence and Security Committee Irakli Beraia at the Ministry of Defence in Bratislava today, for talks on the key security issues in the region affected by Russia's war against Ukraine, Georgia's security challenges and its European and Euro-Atlantic integration efforts, and the opportunities for closer defence and security cooperation.
In discussions with the Georgian MPs from the Defence and Security Committee, State Secretary Majer acknowledged Slovakia's continued support for Georgia's Euro-Atlantic aspiration and the territorial integrity of its internationally recognised borders. On the latter, Mr Majer was informed of the current security and humanitarian situation in Russian-occupied Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the independence of which is not recognised by Slovakia.
On the SVK-GEO relationship, State Secretary Marian Majer said: “Our bilateral cooperation with Georgia in the field of defence gradually continues to go from strength to strength. This is best evidenced by our intent to open the Slovak Defence Attaché Office (DAO) in Tbilisi as early as this summer. This step has the potential to improve the quality of our relations, which is in the interests of both our countries.”
At the meeting with the Georgian Parliamentarians, Mr Majer highlighted SVK-GEO cooperation thus far and identified possible areas of collaboration on military education and training, explosive ordnance disposal (EOD), and logistics support. Given that Slovakia views Georgia as a country where the SVK defence industry's products could be used potentially, he reaffirmed Slovakia's interest in strengthening armaments cooperation with Georgia.
