Jánošík Military Folklore Ensemble has announced competitive auditions for new members

The Jánošík Military Folklore Ensemble (VUS), based in Zvolen, has announced competitive auditions for civilian vacancies in the Jánošík Ensemble’s Dance, Singing and Music Groups.
1. Audition for the Jánošík Ensemble Dance Group
When: 14:00-18:00, 28-29 May 2026
Where: SVK Railways Culture House, Sokolská 69, 960 01 Zvolen, Slovakia
Who: Candidates for Head of the Dance Group, Male Dancer / Female Dancer – Soloist, and Male Dancer / Female Dancer
What we require:
- all auditionees must be at least 18 years old to audition for the Ensemble,
- demonstration of mastery of folklore, modern and ballroom dances at an advanced level,
- dynamics of movement and footsteps, flexibility, and fitness,
- previous experience of working with professional or non-professional dance companies is welcome.
What we offer:

2. Audition for the Jánošík Ensemble Singing Group
When: 14:00-18:00, 28-29 May 2026
Where: SVK Railways Culture House, Sokolská 69, 960 01 Zvolen, Slovakia
Who: Candidates for Male and Female Singers
What we require:
- all auditionees must be at least 18 years old to audition for the Ensemble,
- previous experience in singing folklore and modern songs as a soloist or an ensemble singer,
- a statement of the number of years working with professional or non-professional music ensembles,
- a degree from a music conservatoire or a Master of Music (MMus) degree in voice performance from an academy (i.e. the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava) is an advantage,
- sight singing and interpreting the musical notation.

The selection process consists of the following points:
- one slow and one fast composition or song (any styles and genres, but one folklore song is mandatory),
- reading music notes and interpreting the musical notation,
- repeating rhythmic exercises,
- making simple dance movements,
- vocal range exercises with a pianist.

3. Audition for the Jánošík Ensemble Music Group
When: 13:00-18:00, 17-18 June 2026
Where: SVK Railways Culture House, Sokolská 69, 960 01 Zvolen, Slovakia
Who: Candidates for Male and Female Musicians – Violinist, Violist, and Contrabassist
What we require:
- all auditionees must be at least 18 years old to audition for the Ensemble,
- a music conservatory degree or a Master of Music degree in violin/viola/contrabass performance,
- previous experience of working with a folklore ensemble,
- musicianship and technical instrument skills expected of a folklore orchestra member,
- demonstration of mastery of other folklore musical instruments is an advantage.

Audition repertoire list:
- Violinist
1. All auditionees are asked to choose one of the following three prescribed pieces – the 1st movement including the cadenzas from W. A. Mozart: Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major (KV 216), Violin Concerto No. 4 in D major (KV 218), or Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major (KV 219) to show the performers at their best.
2. Rinaldo Oláh: “Borovka”.
3. Playing from sheet music.
- Violist
2. Playing with band accompaniment.
3. Playing from sheet music.
- Contrabassist
1. Any scale (3 octaves + arpeggios), any recital piece.
2. Playing with band accompaniment.
3. Playing from sheet music.
APPLICATION DEADLINE is 1 June 2026. Piano accompaniment, which is mandatory, will not be provided automatically. The application form must include a request for piano accompaniment to be provided by the Jánošík Ensemble or a notification that the candidate will bring his/her own piano accompanist for the audition. If the applicant requests the Jánošík Ensemble to provide a piano accompanist, this information must be included in the application form along with the preferred concerto. Playing music from memory is not a requirement.
