EU Foreign Affairs Council officially launches PESCO

The EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) today formally adopted the Council Decision establishing Permanent Structured Cooperation in the field of security and defence (PESCO), with 25 EU Member States participating in PESCO. The Slovak Republic expressed its intention to participate in this enhanced form of cooperation by signing a joint notification on PESCO on 13 November 2017 at the Council of the EU. On behalf of the Slovak Republic, the notification was signed by SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš and State Secretary of the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry Ivan Korčok.

PESCO is a historic milestone in the EUʼs security and defence cooperation and a signal of its capacity for action. The EU Member States participating in PESCO have also agreed to fulfil 20 common binding commitments ensuing from their participation in this initiative. They include areas where it is possible to develop jointly the defence capabilities of the participating Member States and their Armed Forces, with a view to bringing their collaboration to a higher level. One of the PESCO commitments is the requirement for each participating member state to take part in least one multinational project to be undertaken under PESCO.

In this respect, the Slovak Republic has achieved its first successes. Its own “EuroArtillery” project, aimed at developing the Indirect Fire Support (IFS) capability, has made it onto the list of the first collaborative PESCO projects. The Slovak project has been selected from among the 49 PESCO related project proposals for the final 17 projects, which will be implemented in Phase I of PESCO.
