The cooperation between Slovakia and Serbia in the field of defence is smooth and both sides have affirmed their interest in deepening it. On this, Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš and the Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to Slovakia, His Excellency Mr Šani Dermaku, were in agreement during their meeting today. Ambassador Dermaku paid his farewell visit to the MOD due to the end of his Diplomatic Service appointment in Slovakia.
At the meeting, both leaders took stock of bilateral cooperation, exchanged experience on integration processes and military reforms, and evaluated the benefits of the intergovernment treaty signed between the countries in December 2016.
“The Slovak Republic has since long supported the integration efforts of your country into the Euro-Atlantic structures. From the perspective of stabilising the Western Balkans region, we see you as an important and exceptional partner,” said Minister Peter Gajdoš. He further noted that there is a space for development of cooperation, especially on training of medical staff and troops to be deployed on peace support operations.
At the meeting, Minister Gajdoš brought Ambassador Dermaku up to date on the MODʼs strategic documents and modernisation processes that follow from them. The Minister also appreciated the long-term cooperation between SLOVCON and SERBCON in support of UNFICYP in Cyprus. 46 Serbian personnel are currently deployed under the command of SLOVCON.
Also discussed was the deepening of EU defence cooperation through PESCO, where Slovakia achieved its first success with its “EuroArtilleryˮIndirect Fire Support project.
