Minister Gajdoš recognises a serviceman for saving the life of an 11-year-old boy

Minister Gajdoš today recognised Capt Miloš Karell for saving the life of an 11-year old boy drowning in the River Váh last month. He thanked him for his act of heroism which testifies to the fact that the military profession is not a job but a mission. “This act of bravery shows that servicemen and women are here for all SVK citizens on a 24/7 basis,” said Head of the MOD.

He added that rescuing a life is a moral duty of citizens and service personnel alike. “None of us knows how we would react in a highly tense situation where seconds make a difference. Capt Karell, a member of the SVK Armed Forces, made the right decision and put his life in harmʼs way to rescue a drowning boy. I believe his act of bravery will be an inspiration for his colleagues and for all those who are thinking about joining Voluntary Military Training or the SVK Armed Forces so as to reach out to others. The Armed Forces will train them for this mission,” Minister Gajdoš.

“Over my tenure as Chief of Defence I have come across a few exceptional personalities and I consider Captain Karell to be one of them. I am so glad I am in command of soldiers like him. What he did is a positive example for the Armed Forces and for all those who serve in them,” noted CHOD Gen Milan Maxim, who presented Capt Karell with the Armed Forces Honorary Badge, 2nd Grade (in Silver), for his meritorious act of saving a human life.

“I heard somebody calling for help hopelessly. The water was about 0 degrees Celsius. There was no time to wait, so I stepped onto the ice, lay down on my stomach, and started to crawl towards the drowning boy. While doing so, I tried to speak with him. When I dragged him out of the water, we crawled together back to the river bank, where the rescue services were already waiting for us. Subsequently, he was given first aid by medics,” said Captain Miloš Karell, describing the dramatic rescue.

The incident happened on 5 March 2018. Capt Miloš Karell, of HQ CSS Bde Trenčín, was off duty and driving home from work along the River Váh, when he caught sight of the drowning boy who had fallen through the ice into the river. Risking his own life, he crawled along the ice up to 11-year old Alexej and pulled him out of the cold water. With the water 3-4m deep below and the water temperature at 0 degrees Celsius, the boyʼs life was in danger due to strong undercurrents.
