The Security Council and the Cabinet have today approved the deployment of SVK service personnel to support NATOʼs enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) mission in the Baltics. If approved by Parliament, Slovakia will deploy 152 soldiers to Latvia in the second half of 2018.
SVK Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: “We will thereby join the Allies and the concept adopted at the NATO Warsaw Summit in July 2016. Its aim is to demonstrate Allied solidarity, resolve and readiness to respond to whatever potential aggression may occur. Thanks to this move, we will reaffirm that we are an active NATO member.”
SVK soldiers will deploy on NATOʼs enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) role as part of the Canadian-led Battlegroup and will operate across Ādaži Training Area in Latvia. Deploying with a Mechanised Company, a Command and Control Element, a Repairs and Operation Platoon as a support element, and a Military Police Team, SVK troops will be sent to the Baltics for two 6-month rotations.
Two SVK liaison officers have been posted to Latvia since November 2017, to prepare the ground for the scheduled engagement of our soldiers in the country. The proposed SVK contribution to NATOʼs eFP was approved by the SVK Cabinet in May 2017. Subsequently, this commitment was officially declared at the mini-summit in Warsaw by the Slovak delegation.
