Mount Kriváň International Hiking Event

The 23rd Mount Kriváň International Hiking Event, organised by the Slovak Soldiers Association, was attended by 1,150 participants, of whom approx. 200 were servicemen and women with a similar number of family relatives.

“This year is significant for us because it marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Czechoslovakia and Constitution Day. Traditionally, the event is also organised in honour of the Slovak National Uprising,” said Director General of the Human Resources Department Col Radoslav Ivančík ahead of the ascent at a commemorative ceremony at the SNP Heroes Memorial on the bank of Mountain Lake ‛Štrbské plesoʼ.

On behalf of Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš, he greeted those present and awarded Lt Col (Rtd) Peter Kramarčík, member of the Association, with the SVK Armed Forces 25th Anniversary Medal. In attendance at the ceremony was Land Forces Commander Maj Gen Jindřich Joch. Then, Chairman of the Slovak Soldiers Association Lt Col (Rtd) Eugen Bitera welcomed his colleagues from partner organizations from Poland, Hungary and Czechia and thanked the SVK MOD and the Mountain Rescue Service for their support to the event.

Speaking later in the evening before lighting the ‛SNPʼ bonfire, Lt Col (Rtd) Eugen Bitera appreciated that more and more children come to climb Mount Kriváň, as well as praising the physical condition of 72-year old Col (Rtd) Ján Železník, of Liptovský Mikuláš, the oldest participant of the hiking event.
