SVK Chief of Defence attends NATO Military Committee Conference in Warsaw

SVK Chief of Defence Lt Gen Daniel Zmeko attended the NATO Military Committee Conference (NATO MCC) on 28-30 September 2018, accompanied by the SVK Military Representative to the NATO Military Committee, Maj Gen Ondřej Novosad. NATO MCC in Chiefs of Defence format takes place every year and is among the highest meetings of NATO military bodies. NATO MCC 2018 was organised at the invitation of the Polish Chief of Defence, Lt Gen Rajmund Andrzejczak. SACEUR General Curtis M. Scaparrotti and SACT General André Lanata were also in attendance.
Allied readiness, responsiveness, and modernization of capabilities were the core themes at the conference. In a separate session, the Chiefs of Defence exchanged their views on the recommendations for future NATO operations, exercises and activities to be conducted in close cooperation with international organizations. Lt Gen Daniel Zmeko reassured Allies of the SVK Armed Forcesʼcontinued involvement in the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan and intent to deliver training capabilities for the new NATO mission in Iraq.
On the margins of the conference, the CHODs of the countries participating in the Canadian-led enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battle Group in Latvia met in a joint session. Lt Gen Daniel Zmeko stated the SVK Armed Forcesʼ intent to continue their involvement in this activity in the upcoming period, while at the same time assuring Allies that the SVK Armed Forces are ready to transform their contribution to the eFP BG in order to provide any one of the niche capabilities.
At the conclusion of the conference, Lt Gen Hans-Werner Wiermann of Germany was voted to be the next Director General of the NATO International Military Staff (DGIMS). He will assume the appointment in 2019.
