Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day: Let us not allow the legacy of 17 November 1989 to fade away, says P. Gajdoš

Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš along with Parliamentary Chairman Andrej Danko attended a ceremony held in observance of Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day at the Monument dedicated to the Victims of Communism at the cemetery in Bratislavaʼs Vrakuňa, paying their respects to all executed and tortured political prisoners during the communist regime.
Parliamentary Chairman Andrej Danko said: "Today, to the people who suffered I want to say, with my head bent down in respect, that they are in our hearts and minds and to those who do not know what values are and who think they can say anything only because they work for media sponsored by oligarchs I want to tell them they should return to values and respect. It is easy to hurt a person, but it is difficult to undo it.”
Minister of Defence Peter Gajdoš said: "17 November is a symbol standing for the strength and determination of the people who were not afraid to rise up and struggle for the ideals of better tomorrows. Today marks the day we won our freedom back. Let us not allow its legacy to fade away.” At the same time, he emphasised that freedom and democracy are about assuming responsibility. "It is, therefore, sad to see the public interest in democratic elections and the possibility of influencing the next direction of our State falling,” he added.
Recalling the values of freedom and democracy we have at present, Head of the MOD further emphasised: "Out of respect for all those who were stripped of their most fundamental right – the right to life as they struggled for the principles of freedom and democracy, we must value that we live in a free country today. Because the deployments of Slovak soldiers abroad attest to the fact that these values are not automatically guaranteed anywhere in the world.”
MOD leaders will also mark Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day and the legacy of 17 November 1989 at the Gate of Freedom in Devín during a ceremony to be attended by State Secretary of the SVK MOD Marián Saloň.
