Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš, Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini, and Chief of Defence Lt Gen Daniel Zmeko visited SVK personnel serving on the Resolute Support Mission (RSM) in Afghanistan. As part of their traditional pre-Christmas visit to Afghanistan, they brought a real live Christmas tree as well as ingredients for the traditional Slovak Christmas sauerkraut soup.
Offering his sincere gratitude to our men and women in Afghanistan, Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “All servicemen and women who have performed and are still performing their duties in Afghanistan are deserving of our massive admiration and thanks, because they, too, have assisted in building a more secure and stable landscape in this country to the benefit of both Afghan citizens and international community.” He went on to add that 358 SVK personnel (22 servicewomen) have rotated in and out of RSM in Afghanistan.
Expressing high appreciation for SVK RSM personnel and their work in Afghanistan, Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini said: “By making this trip and bringing these small gifts, we want to express our support, big thanks, and great respect to them for their willingness to put their lives in harmʼs way and represent our country in such a dignified manner. We are grateful to them for bringing credit on Slovakia.”
Speaking on behalf of SVK RSM troops, SLOVCON Commander Lt Col Nikola Vicena expressed his thanks for the gifts from Slovakia and was glad that the live Christmas tree and the traditional Christmas dinner they would cook would help create an atmosphere reminiscent of Christmas back home.
While still in Afghanistan, Minister Gajdoš handed over to local representatives the humanitarian aid that Slovakia had dispatched for children of Mazar-e-Sharif a week earlier. The humanitarian aid consignment consists of 540 school uniforms for boys and girls.
As of today, 36 SVK personnel, including 2 servicewomen, are deployed to Afghanistan. Their mission is to train and advise the Afghan Special Operations Forces (SOF) and the Afghan Air Force, as well as working in support of military medicine capabilities and serving as staff officers.
The total number of SVK service personnel currently deployed on crisis management missions and operations abroad is 482. Over 18,600 SVK Armed Forces servicemen and women have rotated in and out of missions and operations abroad to date.
