Defence Minister P. Gajdoš pays tribute to memory of WW2 victims at Slavín Memorial

Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš paid tribute to the memory of the victims of the Second World War at the Slavín Memorial in Bratislava today (9 May 2019). The commemoration ceremony marked the 74th anniversary of the end of the worst conflict in the world and Victory in Europe Day, known as Victory over Fascism Day in Slovakia.
Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said: “It is of immense importance to remind us of the horrors perpetrated by mankind blinded by the ideology of fascism during the Second World War, because that is the only way we can understand the seriousness of the danger which is today again threatening not only the world but also Slovakia, if we allow extremism to take root in society.”
The Second World War was the bloodiest conflict in the history of mankind, which claimed millions of lives of soldiers and civilians. Almost 7,000 Soviet Army soldiers who were reported dead in action across Slovakia in WW2 are buried in the Slavín Military Cemetery.
