Members of the SVK Armed Forces, joined by representatives of the SVK Government, attended a series of commemorative events in France, marking the 74th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and paying tribute to the memory of General Milan Rastislav Štefánik.

In the presence of French President Emanuel Macron, a Slovak delegation attended the 74th anniversary commemorations of the end of the Second World War on 8 May 2019 in Paris, France. To mark 100 years since General Štefánik’s death, “The Year of General Štefánik in France” was launched in front of the General Štefánik Statue on the terrace of the Meudon Observatory in Meudon. At the event, Slovak financial aid to help reconstruct the observatory and establish a Memorial Room of General M. R. Štefánik was handed over to officials of the observatory.

Then in the village of Wormhout in the grounds of the former Headquarters Czechoslovak Independent Armoured Brigade Group, members of the SVK Armed Forces Guard of Honour along with SVK Defence Attaché Col Peter Knánik participated in a ceremony commemorating the German surrender after the Battle of Dunkerque. During another ceremony at La Targette Cemetery, they paid respects to the memory of the Czech and Slovak soldiers who died in WW1 and WW2.
