MOD and Armed Forces leaders mark 75th anniversary of Bratislava's liberation

To mark the 75th anniversary of Bratislava's liberation, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď, State Secretary of the SVK MOD Marian Majer and Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko today attended an act of commemoration at the Victory Memorial in Bratislava's Eugen Suchoň Square, to pay their respects to the memory of the soldiers and civilians who lost their lives in liberating our capital city. In attendance at the commemoration were Deputy Parliamentary Chairman Gábor Grendel, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security Juraj Krúpa, and Member of Parliament and OĽANO Parliamentary Caucus Leader Michal Šipoš. On this occasion, the Defence Minister emphasised that never ever should acts of extremism and intolerance find their place in society.

Reflecting on the occasion, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: "Today we payed our respects to all heroes who, 75 years ago, showed no hesitation and made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight against the Nazi regime by giving their own lives to liberate Bratislava. Through their determination to win over "evil", they showed they were not indifferent to the future. Therefore, events like this one should never be forgotten." As he further noted, commemorative ceremonies hosted regularly in celebration of landmark events in Slovak and European history open up a space for how to bring such events closer to present-day generations.

Soviet and Romanian divisions launched the operation to free Bratislava from Nazi occupation on 2 April 1945, with the focus of the military campaign moving directly inside the city on the second day of fighting. A total of 742 Soviet, 470 German and Hungarian soldiers, and 121 civilians died in the battle to liberate the capital city. A number of buildings were burned down or damaged in the battle, which lasted from 2 to 4 April 1945.
