Current issues in the field of defence and security, the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic and of other challenges such as NATO resilience, the continuation of NATO missions, the Alliance's response to the Russian missile systems development, which the North Atlantic Alliance must face today, were the central themes of today's online discussion of NATO Defence Ministers. Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď, too, participated in the video conference.
Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “The positions of the Slovak Republic in the field of addressing common issues and challenges remain unchanging, which is evidenced by our active burden sharing and participation in the Alliance's collective defence. Slovak soldiers continue to serve in NATO missions in Afghanistan, Iraq and in the Baltics. Just as on entering the Alliance we committed ourselves to delivering these tasks and goals together, we are delivering them, and we plan to continue doing so.”
During the video conference, the heads of the MODs spoke about the Secretary General's vision for NATO 2030. In this context, they underlined the necessity of NATO countries' global approach to addressing common challenges, including through non-military, diplomatic and economic means. On this occasion, Minister Naď appreciated that Slovakia's membership in NATO creates, even in the politico-military area, a space for implementing common value-oriented goals to the benefit of the international community.
NATO Defence Ministers also underscored the support the armed forces have provided to civilian authorities since the outbreak of the pandemic. Additionally, they paid attention to a potential second wave of COVID-19, including how to deal with it effectively. In this respect, they discussed creating an operational plan, a trust fund, and stockpiles of medical material which can be drawn on, if required, by individual allies and partners to meet urgent requests for assistance.
