The Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs have set a goal of formulating the new strategic security and defence documents by the end of 2020. This follows from the joint proposal of the ministries to frame the SVK Security Strategy and the SVK Defence Strategy, which was today approved by the Government.
Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “This is an issue of SVK security and defence. Indeed, it was irresponsible that the two documents were not updated during the previous election term and so the 2005 documents are still valid. Yet, we must be aware of everything that has happened in the world between 2005 and 2020 and what our strategic documents essentially fail to reflect.” He also stressed that the MOD greatly needs an updated and approved version of the SVK Defence Strategy. “This document is, so to say, the roof of all planning documents we have in Defence. This is about systemic defence planning and it must make perfect sense,” he explained.
As Foreign and European Affairs Minister Ivan Korčok said, the Government has committed to preparing and endorsing the new strategic documents in the SVK Government Manifesto. “This is a basic document in which the Slovak Republic will have its say on how it sees the world we live in. From the political perspective, I find it necessary to have one position on what the world we live in looks like and the world is definitely in great transition,” said Minister Korčok.
According to the Government-approved proposal, both documents will reflect today's foreign policy and security developments, whereas the ministries want to lead intense discussions on the strategies with the public. They also want to see NGOs, professional experts, academia, and all political parties in Parliament wishing to do so involved in framing the strategies.
The drafting of the documents should be transparent and systemic. Towards this end, an interdepartmental working group is to meet as early as the end of July 2020. In this context, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď underlined that the cooperation between the two ministers and their ministries on framing the documents has been excellent since the very first moments.
