A fire broke out in the Military District Záhorie woodlands in an area called Turecký Vrch (Turkish Hill) on Sunday 25 April 2021. A total of seven hectares of young beech woodland burnt, with the damage estimate exceeding €100,000. The cause of the fire is unknown.
Based on the preliminary statement by the fire control inspector, it will be difficult to determine the cause due to the extensive area of the wildfire and strong winds. Director of Military Forests and Estates Ján Jurica warns of an increased risk of fires over the dry period and calls on the public to respect the ban on setting up fires outside the designated fire places. “When there are woodland fires, losses are not only financial, but there is also a threat to the ecosystem the restoration of which is time consuming,” he emphasised.
Mr Jurica thanked the firefighters for preventing the fire from spreading further and extinguishing it. The firefighters negotiated difficult terrain to contain it. In addition to deploying professional firefighters from three fire stations in Bratislava and a fire station from Malacky, the Rescue Brigade of the Fire and Rescue Corps Malacky, and members of the Volunteer Fire Corps from the municipalities of Jablonové, Lozorno and Stupava, the fire operation was supported by a SVK Interior Ministry helicopter equipped with a Bumbi Bucket system. The Turecký Vrch fire was put out before 19:00.
