Today (4 May 2021) at the Grassalkovich Palace, eight SVK Armed Forces members received formal recognition and medals for their outstanding service during the coronavirus crisis from President and Commander-in-Chief of the SVK Armed Forces Zuzana Čaputová. The medal award ceremony was attended by Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď, Health Minister Vladimír Lengvarský, and Chief of Defence Gen Daniel Zmeko.
Speaking in appreciation of all servicemen and women in the fight against the pandemic, Minister Naď said: “Today's award of medals comes as a symbol of thank you and respect to all servicemen and women who have performed a variety of tasks on a day-to-day basis since the outbreak of the pandemic, facilitating the work of not only the Police Corps, but also that of hard-pressed medical personnel and others whose role in this fight was and is crucial. At the same time, this is testament that soldiers are here for our citizens uninterruptedly, ready to help on crisis management operations wherever needed.”
The medals were picked up today by Sgt Marek Sovský, Pte 1C Juraj Černota, Pte 1C Patrícia Kuchárová, SSgt Ivana Kováčová, Sgt 1C Pavol Janešík, Brig Ladislav Dovhun, Sgt Peter Pápež, and a member of the SVK Special Operations Forces.
In addition to having his professional qualification, Sgt Marek Sovský enrolled in the Emergency Sanitation Worker Course only to make use of this qualification as he was sent into COVID-19 hospital wards at the Central Military Hospital Ružomberok, the Faculty Hospital Nitra, and the Žiar nad Hronom Hospital.
Pte 1C Juraj Černota, too, graduated from the Emergency Sanitation Worker Course and deployed to different hospital wards to help contain COVID-19.
Among those awarded were also Sgt 1C Pavol Janešík and SSgt Ivana Kováčová who spent eight two-week rotations at the Infectious Diseases Clinic, Central Military Hospital Ružomberok.
The medal was also presented to Pte 1C Patrícia Kuchárová who repeatedly deployed to trace the contacts of those infected at the Regional Public Health Authority Office Spišská Nová Ves. She also deployed on mixed patrols with police officers. During one mixed patrol, she saved the life of a man who was trying to commit a suicide on a rail track in the municipality of Lada.
A member of the Special Operations Forces collected the medal for his role in preparing, planning and conducting Op Shared Responsibility as a coordinator of the Tactical Operations Centre operating under the Regional Headquarters (RHQ) Žilina during all four phases of the operation.
Newly appointed as Chief of Staff SVK Air Force, Brig Ladislav Dovhun was reassigned as Deputy Commander Joint Operations Task Force under Op Shared Responsibility. Through his active and innovative approach to handling the tasks of the Joint Operations Task Force, he greatly contributed to the success of Op Shared Responsibility.
Also awarded for his contribution to fighting COVID-19 was junior medic Sgt Peter Pápež, a member of the Presidential Guard of Honour.
