The Ministry of Defence has concluded the 17th MOD Literary Competition, a creative writing contest open to secondary school and college students with this year’s theme: 'Oath of Allegiance'. The winners, who will be rewarded with cash prizes of €500 (1st place), €400 (2nd place), and €300 (3rd place) in each category, have been chosen in an online public vote on a social networking site.
Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said: “The MOD Literary Competition is one of the initiatives through which we want to support students' interest in the defence of our country. Having read some of the entries, I must say I am pleasantly surprised. I wish to congratulate the winners on their success and I am convinced many will be enthused when they read the winning entries on defence and security.“
The finalists were shortlisted from 105 entrants with 112 short stories and essays by the MOD judging panel, composed of editors from Defence Magazine (the official monthly publication of the MOD), staff from the MOD's Press Office, and members of the Slovak Armed Forces. All entries were logged and numbered as they came in, so that they could be judged anonymously and matched back to their entry.
The online public vote on the MOD's Facebook page took place on 1-6 December 2021. A total of 5,500 votes determined the final order of winners.
Winning in the Secondary Students category is Tímea Babjáková, a student from Army General Ludvík Svoboda Grammar School in Humenné, with her essay 'The Road to Oath', followed in the 2nd and 3rd places by Andrea Babíncová, a student from M. R. Štefánik Basic School of Arts in Považská Bystrica, with her short story entitled 'Failings', and Lucia Poláčeková, a student from Mother Alexia Grammar School in Bratislava, with her short story named 'Oath of Allegiance'.
In the College Students category, Lenka Kolcunová, a student of Prešov University, came top with her essay 'Demagogy as a Trend of Objective Truth'. Last year, she earned the 1st place ranking in the Secondary Students category. And the second and third place winners, both students from the University of Economics in Bratislava, were Michal Kutiš with his short story 'Kamikaze' and Slávka Jalčová with her entry 'Oath of Allegiance'.
The short stories and essays shortlisted for the finale are available online to the public at Sútaž 2021. In addition, the winning entries will appear in the January 2022 issue of Defence Magazine, which is available online at Obrana.
